Prep Food Ideas - For the reluctant Shopper

I told Mom (83 y.o. God bless her) that I was stocking the pantry. So she picks up small items when she goes shopping that have long shelf life. I had a SL of beans and pasta and the simple items. But here's what Mom got me this week.

The ham expires in 2012 and is small, 1 lbs, about 5" tall.

Happy Prepping:RockOn:

I have a reasonable amount of the dak ham, probably 20 cans or so.. Long shelf life, MUCH better than SPAM.

It is mechanically separated ham though, so it tends to get a little mushy when cooked. It is still good for beans, black eyed peas, etc. Not as good as real ham, but will definitely add some flavor. If you only have beens and rice, you will be wiling to eat about anything for a different flavor.

Tuna and canned chicken (the sams club canned chicken is VERY good) are good or better alternatives.

Check the big chain drugstores. I found the DAK canned ham at Longs for either 2.69 or 2.99. Pretty good price, and the expiry was 2013! Both drugstores I checked had some different food items that I hadn't seen in other stores. I was there topping up my "booze preps"; they had advertised some really good deals on spirits.

back in the fall of 1990 I went on a heavy food storage kick, had a few thousand pounds of grains, oats, wheat, rice, barley, etc. several hundred cans of ham, spam, stew, hash, tuna, etc. completely packed a one ton van, waited a few weeks for the road to freeze up, so i could drive it in to the house. finally spent a good solid afternoon carting it all up in the house then the place burned to the ground a week later...
.corned beef and ham cans were exploding for many hours into the morning, long after all the ammo had finished going off. burned out wreckage was knee deep in blown open ham cans .... what a waste.

Damn, thats a hell of a story there, Fullpower :36_1_25:

I also have a few cans of that ham, haven't cracked one open yet though.

I did happen to try one of the canned meats I've found at the local shops today; pretty damn good. :ok: Hereford Cubed Beef, just shredded it up with a fork, mixed in some Jack Daniels BBQ sauce, heated it up & BAM: BBQ Beef Sandwiches in no time flat. Relatively inexpensive, fully cooked 6 lbs. (or 1 lb.) cans of meat, & "Best by" date is 2012, prob last longer if properly stored. My kind of preps!

Might be worth an add to the shopping list for the "reluctant" prepper

Oh, man that is quite a story! I hope it's been long enough that you don't mind that I am LOL at this. Thanks for sharing.

Costco has canned beef that is delicious - brisket, nice and tender. I do the same thing, or put it over mashies.

WOW man......what a shame.....

Fire is one thing that scare me the most. I keep my preps widely scattered for that reason.....my fuels, oils, etc are in a separate shed well out away from most everything........but a fire in the main house would still be a freaking disaster.

Our local fire department ( volunteer ) is known as the "Marshmellow patrol".....they get there with the marshmellows in time to cook them on the embers.

I lost seveal hundered dollars worth of canned goods because of a long freeze and no power in my (lp furnace heated) outside storage bldg .... this stuff goes bad when frozen too. I lost about half of it. The veggies that didn't burst were okay but the expensive canned meats were wasted.

Since that time I've concentrated on dried goods and only keep enough canned items to winter over in my house.
